Starboard Architects Profile
Starboard Architects provides thoughtful, innovative design solutions responsive to our clients’ vision and finances, and sensitive to the criteria of sustainable practices. Based in New York City, we design an eclectic range of projects for public agencies and non-profits as well as educational institutions and private clients. Much of our work considers the impact of new construction on the existing buildings: over the years we’ve preserved or reconstructed historic buildings, and designed new structures within historic contexts.
Evolving from the studio opened by Joseph Tonetti in 1968, we recently designated the firm Starboard Architects to reflect the leadership of Andrew Wright and the emeritus status of Joseph Tonetti. Andrew leads a diverse team of architects that includes designers, LEED accredited professionals, preservation experts, project managers, and architectural historians. Our level of hands-on principal involvement is unusual in the industry, and TAA professionals provide our firm with a global breadth of experience and a productive depth of specialized knowledge.
Over the years, we’ve honed our skills on a wide variety of project types. For nearly a decade, TAA held the sole-source Historic Preservation contract with the NYC Department of Design and Construction, during which we ushered more than a dozen projects through the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Our work has been recognized by the NYC Landmarks Conservancy, who granted our restoration for the Hunt’s Point Library its Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award.
Recent projects include the Mars Education Center at Fort Ticonderoga, a master plan for the Staten Island Museum, and a multi-use building for the Kingdom of Bhutan’s Mission to the United Nations.

“Bread Loaf Corporation had the privilege of working with Tonetti Associates on the Mars Education Center project at Fort Ticonderoga from 2003- 2008. Based on this broad experience, we at Bread Loaf can say with assurance that the people at Tonetti Associates are some of the finest in the business: they are professional and dedicated to historic preservation and sustainability, and committed to meeting the goals and visions of their clients.”

“Part of the reason of why we selected Tonetti Associates Architects was because of their flexibility and their personalities; they didn’t bring their egos, they brought their personalities, and it shows. (…) If I am ever going to build another Fort I will start with an architect named Andrew Wright.”

“During the master planning they energized our staff to commit to major change and craft a vision for the future. The firm demonstrated a sure hand in defining and developing the programmatic plan for our new facility. The task ahead of us seemed daunting initially, but with the insightful and clear leadership of Andrew Wright of Tonetti Associates, our curatorial and executive team was able to articulate the full scope of our current needs and our hopes for a dramatically improved Museum environment.”
Elizabeth Egbert
President & CEO at Staten Island Museum
“It typically takes 6-7 weeks (excluding shipping) for the order to be detailed and fabricated. However, working with disciplined and organized architecture firm such as Tonetti Associates Architects, we might be able to reduce that time frame.”
