The Union Workhouse in Callan Co. Kilkenny is a surviving example of the poor houses built by the British across Ireland prior to the Great Famine of 1840’s. A Camphill Community for disabled people occupies a portion of this building and they invited us to assist in the restoration of workhouse by preparing a visual analysis and recommendations for the exterior restoration of the building. The workhouse is listed in the County Kilkenny Record of Protected Structures for whom we submitted our report .
