Each spring and fall, the Virginia’s National Wildlife Refuge is the site of a spectacular drama as millions of songbirds, monarch butterflies and thousands of raptors converge on the Eastern shore on their migration south. To help visitors understand the natural environmental heritage of the peninsula, we designed the expansion of the US Fish and Wildlife Visitor’s Center. The building was oriented to take advantage of the prevailing breeze and use natural daylight. Incorporated within the design are three-dimensional and interactive displays, a wide-span observation window and a multi-purpose auditorium.
